Add Distance Learning Designation (Initial DL)

A course or sections of a course in which students can participate fully without being physically present on campus must be designated as a distance learning (DL) course or section. You can propose to add a DL designation via a new or modified course proposal.

Step 1:  Check the “This is a proposal to add Distance Learning designation to the course” box.

Step 2:  Complete the DL Section

Distance Learning Section

  • Online Instructional and Additional Hours: Specify the breakdown of the course and manually total up the weekly hours in the TOTAL section.
  • Delivery: Specify the means of content delivery used in the distance learning portions of the course.
  • Pace: Specify whether the pace of the DL course is synchronous (students work through the material at the same, pre-determined pace) or asynchronous (students work through material at their own pace)
  • Outcomes: If this DL course is also being offered as a separate version in the classroom, please describe how the DL and in-classroom instructor will coordinate expected learning outcomes, examinations, and grading.
  • Exams: How will examinations be administered securely? Specify safeguards for academic integrity.
  • Feedback: Specify and describe how students will receive feedback throughout the course and how student learning will be assessed.
  • Student Interaction: How will students interact with the instructor and other students? Will there be any face-to-face meetings with the instructor and other students?

Step 3:  Attach a syllabus for the DL course as well as the in-classroom syllabus, if both are planned.

Attach the syllabus in the supporting documents section.

Renew Distance Learning Designation (3-Year Review)

An initial DL designation expires after 3 years. You may permanently renew a DL designation using the following steps:

Step 1:  Choose “Propose Changes” from the right-hand menu.

Step 2:  Check the “This is a proposal to renew Distance Learning designation (3 year review)” box.

Step 3:  Complete the required DL renewal fields.

  • Changes to DL Version Since Approval: Describe any changes to the DL version of the course that have occurred since the initial approval using the information provided on the New Course Application or the Course Change Application, whichever was submitted for the initial approval.
  • Evidence DL Version Meets Outcomes: Provide evidence to show how the DL version meets the educational outcomes of the course. If an in-classroom version of the same course exists, provide evidence that the DL course meets the same educational outcomes as the in-classroom course.
  • Completion Rates for DL Course: Provide data on completion rates for DL courses. If available, compare to data for in-classroom version of the course.

Step 4:  Attach an updated syllabus for the DL course as well as the in-classroom syllabus, if both are planned.

Attach the syllabus in the supporting documents section.
